Program Description

Two or more PhD positions in theoretical physics towards scattering amplitudes and integrability, broadly defined, at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University, starting 2026/09/01, or as agreed. The PhD positions are for four years and nine months and part of the following two projects funded by the European Research Council:

(1) ERC Synergy Grant project MaScAmp (Mathematics of Scattering Amplitudes) with PIs Ruth Britto (Trinity College Dublin), Francis Brown (University of Oxford), Axel Kleinschmidt (MPI for Gravitational Physics, Potsdam) and Oliver Schlotterer (Uppsala University).

(2) ERC Advanced Grant project IGTaFT (Integrable Gauge Theories at Finite Temperature) with PI Joseph Minahan.

The main activities will be research in theoretical and mathematical physics related to either (1) the mathematical structure of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory, or to (2) integrable gauge theories and their string theory duals, especially at finite temperatures. Other duties at the department related to teaching and administration will be included in the positions (maximum 20 %). The successful candidates will join the Theoretical Physics Division in Uppsala which currently consists of approximately 40 researchers and offers a world-class environment for research in high-energy physics and mathematical physics.

As part of the MaScAmp Synergy Grant (https://www.mascamp.org), the successful candidate will be part of the larger MaScAmp team and is expected to participate in regular exchanges among the nodes in Dublin, Oxford, Potsdam and Uppsala. In both cases, we encourage and offer travel funds for extended visits at the respective partner institutes.

Prerequisites: The positions require a masters degree or equivalent in physics or mathematics.

The application must include a statement of no more than one page that summarizes the applicant's merits, academic experiences, and research interests. In particular, the statement is an opportunity to let us know about specific inclination towards / research background in the fields of IGTaFT and / or MaScAmp. The application must also include a CV, copies of university grades, completed theses or manuscripts and other relevant publications.

The applicant should arrange to have two or more letters of recommendation. Contact information for the letter writers should be included in the application. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.

* Additionally, applicants are required to submit the same documents, without the letters of recommendation, to the Uppsala University website by February 27th 2026 *
