Program Description
Individuals who have received a notice of nomination from The Phyle Project: Revitalizing Democracy in History, Theory, and Practice, are invited to submit their applications for one of 12 three-year grants of $8,000 (USD) per year. Only those who have received notice of nomination are eligible to apply. The Phyle Project promotes academic scholarship relevant to the question of how organized systems of citizen self-government have been (or ought to be) strengthened, defended in times of crisis, or restored after being overthrown. Nominees have been chosen from the disciplines of classics, history, political science, and philosophy. The final selection of award winners will be made by an international academic committee. The Phyle Project is funded by the International Balzan Prize Foundation, through the prize awarded in November 2025 to Professor Josiah Ober (Stanford University) for work on “Athenian Democracy Revisited.” Recipients of the grants are expected to attend two Phyle Project conferences (location and date TBA), and to produce a publishable paper that could potentially be included in an edited volume of essays. Applications are accepted through the AJO portal and are due on or before March 15, 2026. Please submit the following application materials: A research statement (not more than 3 pages), outlining the work you intend to carry out in the next three years, and how it is relevant to the theme of the Project. A brief statement (not more than 1 page) of how you would plan to use a grant of $8,000 per year for 3 years. Acceptable uses include salary, research travel, research assistants, books, equipment. We do not ask for a detailed budget. Curriculum Vitae. A writing sample (not more than 40 pages). This may be a published or an unpublished article or chapter. Contact information for one reference letter writer who can provide a recommendation that addresses the future promise of your scholarship.
