University of Winnipeg, Department of Physics
Program Description
The Winnipeg Particle Theory Group invites applications for Masters of Science studies in the University of Manitoba Department of Physics and Astronomy under the supervision of Profs. Andrew Frey and Margaret Carrington beginning in either Sept 2026 or Jan 2027.
Graduate program requirements include course work and a research-based thesis, and graduate students may hold teaching assistant positions at the University of Manitoba. The MSc thesis project will be in the field of string theory with a focus on either the phenomenology of extra dimensions or information theory in gauge/gravity dualities, depending on the interests of the successful applicant. There is the possibility of continuing PhD studies with Frey and Carrington by mutual agreement on successful completion of the MSc program.
The Winnipeg Particle Theory Group is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons/persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. We maintain an active schedule of weekly seminars and group meetings; members of the Particle Theory Group also participate in activities of the Winnipeg Institute of Theoretical Physics. Graduate students have the opportunity to collaborate with and mentor undergraduate students in the group.
Prof. Frey is a Professor of Physics at the University of Winnipeg, and Prof. Carrington is a Professor of Physics at Brandon University. Both hold adjunct professorships and supervise graduate students at the University of Manitoba. We engage in active mentoring, meeting frequently with our students, and provide support for career success and wellbeing. For information on our research, please see up-to-date lists of our papers at https://inspirehep.net/authors/1009452 and https://inspirehep.net/authors/1014417.
The MSc student will primarily be based at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winnipeg is a culturally rich and diverse community with a rapidly growing population of urban Indigenous people and new Canadians. With its thriving arts scene and access to outdoor amenities, Winnipeg offers a high quality of life.
