Overview
You are invited to apply for an NSF-funded ten-week summer research program hosted by the University of South Carolina Department of Physics and Astronomy. Physics majors are invited to apply for the opportunity to work under the supervision of a physics faculty member on a focused research project.
You will join the research program of a faculty mentor, working alongside graduate students and postdocs in the lab, interacting regularly with your mentor in questions on the frontiers of physics and astronomy. The 2026 program will include a trip to Savannah River National Laboratory, a weekly professional development seminar series, social activities with other REU students, and, at the end of the summer, a poster presentation at the Summer Research Symposium along with students from all other summer research programs at the University of South Carolina.
Projects that were available in 2025 are listed here. A list of 2026 projects will be available on the same website soon.
We welcome students from two-year colleges, liberal arts colleges, and undergraduate institutions with limited research opportunities, to apply. We encourage applications from under-represented groups in physics.
