Program Description
European Security Policy Fellow The Security Studies Program at MIT invites applications for a one-year residential fellowship, the Paul (1969) and Melonie Brophy Fellows Program, for post-doctoral or junior faculty scholars of European security for the 2026-2027 academic year. We interpret European security broadly to include the defense and security policies of one or more NATO and/or European Union member states, Russia, or Ukraine. Projects that focus on NATO or EU security policy as a whole are also of interest. Studies that focus principally on U.S. policy toward Europe, Russia, or Ukraine or “Transatlantic Relations,” however, are unlikely to be considered. The fellow will be expected to participate fully in the activities of the Security Studies Program and to interact intensively with the program’s faculty, students, and other fellows. Post-doctoral and junior faculty applicants must have completed their PhD by the start of the fellowship. Applicants from the policy community are also welcome and should demonstrate equivalent practical and analytic policy experience. Application Procedures Each applicant should submit a packet that includes: • Completed one-page form (download here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qcNZlS6FbcDzzKJmMmG1ehAtvUFTGSUF/view) • a current CV • a short writing sample pertinent to the application • a brief discussion of the applicant’s planned research for the fellowship period • at least two letters of recommendation This residential fellowship is a ten-month appointment from September 1, 2026-June 31, 2027. Stipends will be competitive and commensurate with experience. MIT does not pay for other benefits, but you will be able to purchase both health and dental insurance at a subsidized rate. Fellows are expected to be in residence at MIT for the duration of the fellowship. Office space and supplies, as well as access to MIT’s libraries and other facilities, will be provided.
