Program Description

PhD Position in Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology

The research group led by Prof. Stefan Antusch invites applications for a PhD position, starting in spring 2026 (with flexibility for earlier or later start dates). The expected duration of the position is four years.

Our group is based in the Physics Department at the University of Basel and is engaged in cutting-edge research in theoretical particle physics and cosmology, with a particular emphasis on physics beyond the Standard Model. We study open questions in fundamental physics, explore their connections to early-universe cosmology, and investigate implications for current and future collider experiments. We are also developing new approaches to test models beyond the Standard Model through their predicted gravitational wave signatures.

The specific PhD project will be defined in agreement with the successful candidate and will be related to one or more of the group’s core research activities, such as:

- Models of physics beyond the Standard Model

- Early-universe cosmology

- Collider phenomenology

- Gravitational wave signatures of new physics

We offer

- A vibrant and collaborative research environment

- Close supervision and mentoring by Prof. Stefan Antusch

- Opportunities for international collaboration and networking

- Travel funding for participation in workshops, schools, and conferences

- A competitive salary and benefits package

The successful candidate will conduct original research under the supervision of Prof. Stefan Antusch, in close collaboration with other group members and external partners.

Application requirements

- CV, including a list of specialised courses and relevant academic transcripts

- Motivation letter (1–2 pages) outlining research interests

- A copy of the completed Master’s thesis (or a draft, if not yet finalised)

- Two reference letters

The review of applications will begin on October 20, but later applications will be considered as well. The position will remain open until filled.

Application Materials Required:
Submit the following items online at this website to complete your application:
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research Interests and Motivation
  • Master's Thesis
  • Two reference letters (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site help popup)
And anything else requested in the program description.
