The position is created to provide graduate-student level assistance on research projects during the summer and to offer an entering student research experience that could potentially attract him to conduct his thesis research with my group. Offering a summer position is a standard practice used to recruit students in my research area. Research Assistants (RAs) will perform a variety of functions related to research that represent different levels of independence and that contribute to the intellectual and professional development. They provide leadership and expertise in conducting complex research activities, including planning, organizing, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of a research project at Duke University. The Research Assistant's duties include: (1) Lead, coordinate, and perform a variety of complex independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and interpretation of social, economic or health related information. (2) Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare oral presentations or written reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. (3) Confer with principal investigator in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication. (4) Train lower level personnel and peers in research methodology. Supervise the work of lower level employees engaged in the collection and tabulation of data. (5) Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
