Program Description

Observation Assistant will work with instructor to design, manage, and conduct small-group observation activities at the Duke Teaching Observatory. Duties include: - Organize students into small teams of 4-5 students, grouped into three weekdays for observing sessions - Train each team on using telescopes (on campus) - Help instructor to design seasonally appropriate observation plans and schedules taking into consideration academic calendar, moon phases, visible stars, transient events, and weather - Organize transportation to observatory and back for students using mode of transport to be determined - Monitor student work onsite, help overcome telescope malfunctions/user errors. Advise and instruct on device use and relevant astronomy - Collect and grade student lab reports

PHY134 students conduct small-group lab activities at Duke Teaching Observatory. Managing ~20 students in dark, cold, outdoors requires help onsite, and organizational/logistic aspects of this take time as well. What is needed is a student well-versed in using the telescopes we use. Given the large enrollment this term, it will not be possible to offer the lab experience at the observatory without assistance.
