Margolis Summer Experience Program Overview

Effectively improving health and the value of health care requires multidisciplinary teams and capabilities. To meet this aim, Duke-Margolis uniquely brings together teams of health care and policy experts and organizations to assess key policy and practice challenges and identify and implement impactful solutions. As future policy-leaders and professionals, students are integral team members. The Center offers students (undergraduate and graduate) opportunities to contribute to a variety of projects aimed at improving health and the value of health care through research and the development of innovative, practical, and evidence-based policy solutions through a collaborative and mentored 10-week summer internship experience.

Project Description

Focus Topic: Health Care Transformation

The mission of the Duke-Margolis health care transformation portfolio draws on Duke’s clinical and research expertise to identify care delivery and payment transformation strategies that have an impact in real-world settings; cultivate stakeholder engagement; and develop quantitative and qualitative evidence for supporting major payment and care delivery reforms at the practice, state, and national level.

Project deliverables could include:

  • Conducting literature reviews and synthesis of literature related to health care transformation, especially through value-based payment reforms

  • Assisting with design and conduct of primary qualitative and quantitative research conduct, such as identifying expert interview candidates, developing interview guides, and participating in and analyzing research interviews; or performing descriptive analyses on health policy program data.
  • Co-writing impactful, practical publications for policy-focused audiences, such as issue briefs, white papers, or health policy journal blog posts
  • Performing a variety of other health care transformation team tasks, such as designing slides for policy audiences, assisting with dissemination of work, planning policy convenings, and more

 

Qualifications and experience that would be most useful:

  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams of researchers, especially with ability to work relatively independently and across teams
  • Experience in literature reviews, conducting qualitative or quantitative research
  • Experience presenting research to diverse audiences
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Enthusiasm to learn and work in new topics but with interest in specific topics:
    • Policy levers focusing on transforming how we pay for and deliver health care, including value-based payment
    • Whole-person care, including addressing health-related social needs of health
    •  Health care affordability, especially through accountable, flexible value-based care
    • Equity in health care access and quality
    • Health care system resilience to pandemics and other health emergencies
    • State innovation in health equity, quality, and access, especially through Medicaid and public health programs
Education level requirement: Graduate or PhD level students with interest as well as coursework and/or experiences in health policy

Compensation: $17/hour

Hours per week: approximate 40 hours

Length of Internship: 10 weeks, Program date for 2022: May 18-July 29
